Founder's message

My motivation for founding the Power House was to help others who have “lost the power of choice” are no longer able to stay “clean and sober” on their own power.  By the time I was willing to ask for help, my disease had already progressed beyond that “certain point” point where “staying sober” will become impossible. I quit countless times but could never stay quit. Renewing my resolve, I might hold out for a few weeks or a few months. More often than not, I did not make it even a few days.

Well, I kept going to meetings and working steps on the recovery merry-go-round for over three years before I finally realized I would die before I recovered if I kept "starting over" on the steps after every drink or drug.  With less than a day of sobriety, I picked up the simple kit of spiritual tools and started working all 12 Steps to the best of my ability! It was actually the first time I tried a 12-Step Program, because it takes all 12 steps to have one, and it worked immediately. Trying to help others recover was the key ingredient to this new "Way of Living" which miraculously relieved my obsession to drink or drug and gave me a “New Life” in which “being clean and sober” is no longer a problem!

I have continued to study the Big Book for over 30 years like my life depends on it. I try to carry this message and practice these principles in all my affairs. I’ve been able to summarize everything necessary for my daily reprieve in four Directives: “Wake Up, Get Spiritual, Clean House and Work with Others”. I celebrate 30 years this month!

Our approach to recovery is that we believe Big Book means precisely what it says. Most alcoholics who walk through our doors have been going to AA meetings for years and don’t know a fraction of what the Big Book says they must do to recover. They agree they need a 12-step program, but don’t realize it takes all 12 steps to have one.  Instead of having a simple kit of spiritual tools laid at their feet, most have never been handed more than one tool at time. Today, I have over 30 years of sobriety. The real miracle is that in all that time, I have never once had to try to “stay sober”. I had a spiritual awakening and the problem was simply removed.  And the Big Book program of action I was forced to take in order to recover from alcoholism has given me “way a life” better than the best I could have ever imagined. If these miracles have happened for me and countless other hopeless alcoholics, they can happen for you too!
